I’ve picked up two slightly dented and worn-looking metal lockers (with a few Asterix stickers thrown in for good measure) that I’d like to incorporate into a large bookcase. As they stand, the two lockers have rather limited storage capacity, which is rather impractical for books: they’re deep, with nooks and crannies that make them rather awkward to use. The plan, is to increase the overall storage capacity by connecting the two lockers with shelves, forming an arch (“une arche” in French).
I’ll probably line the inside of the lockers with plywood panels to fill in those awkward corners and add a cosy touch. I haven’t yet found the ideal material for the shelves that will form the arch, I’ve got a few ideas I need to look into over the next few days! I’d like to add a few ‘cosy’ touches to the whole thing, perhaps with a light source that could be moved around the shelving (using an articulated arm or a pulley on a rail?) and/or by repainting all or some of the storage units? We’ll see… It all depends on what I can get hold of over the next few weeks.
In the meantime, here’s a rough plan of action!
The overall width of the unit depends on the shelves and the materials used, but 180/190 cm is probably the upper limit. I’d also like the shelves to be different heights so that I can fit books of all sizes, as well as boxes of board games.
In short, for now this project is mainly a lot of uncertainties (and Asterix stickers); I imagine I’ll just go wherever my discoveries lead me. Watch this space!
